“Klimkin should play a role of hero who will clean the Augean stables of Ukrainian foreign policy”, - Mr. Yaremeko

20 June 2014

New minister for foreign affairs of Ukraine is a great specialist and a polymath. First of all he must revive the foreign policy activities of the country and restore a high level of diplomacy.

Such an opinion was offered by diplomat Bohdan Yaremenko, ex-Consul General of Ukraine in Istanbul, to «Pohliad»/a>.

“If President nominates a candidate and Verkhovna Rada approves it, the person will be considered as already acknowledged. My personal experience and my acquaintance with him confirms that. He is smart, intelligent, faithful and sincere patriot of Ukraine. Aside from that in everyday life he is kind and open person,” – the diplomat said.

In accordance with his words the new minister will have a serious task – to revive activities of Ukrainian foreign policy.

“He will have a very difficult task to bring to life the Ministry of foreign affairs of Ukraine which was disbalanced during presidency of Yushchenko and Yanukovich. And the events that took place on Maidan have rocked Ukrainian diplomacy because it had not come up to expectations of Ukrainian nation. Something must be done with financial situation. Sphere of foreign policy haven’t been financed for several years. He should play a role of hero who will clean the Augean stables of Ukrainian foreign policy”, - the diplomat noted.

Therewith Mr. Yaremenko added that MFA can’t be changed at once, this is a deal of many years. Personnel and financial base of the ministry, conceptual framework of foreign policy – these are long-term issues. There is no reason to think that somebody will come and solve all problems because the complex of challenges is extremely difficult. Activities of the new minister will depend on how much time and what support he will obtain from community, parliament and the President,”- the diplomat explained.

Mr. Yaremenko believes that Mr. Klimkin will continue to seek for methods of renewing a dialog with Russia. “Certainly he will work on the issue because Ukrainian diplomacy is oriented to renew a dialog with Russia and to pursue ceasing the fire. But in respect of Ukrainian efforts the understanding is impossible without Russian consent. In particular RF demonstrates it desire for cooperation in form of tanks and other military equipment which cross Ukrainian border”, - summarized the diplomat.
